About the Artist
Marrita Richardson is a self-taught painter based in Philadelphia whose work boldly reflects the richness, complexity, and beauty of the Black experience. Drawing from memories, music, street culture, and global travel, Marrita creates expressive, story-driven pieces that blend abstract, Afro futurist, cubist, and contemporary styles.
Her artistic journey began in childhood, painting alongside her mother and paging through art books from her home library. Years later, she would discover she was a descendant of renowned Philadelphia painter Louis B. Sloan—an unexpected legacy that continues to inspire her creative path.
Marrita’s work has been featured in exhibitions, magazines, retail spaces, and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. Whether capturing moments of nostalgia or imagining new cultural futures, each piece challenges the viewer to pause, reflect, and feel.
Her current body of work explores themes of identity, girlhood, boyhood, power, and the often overlooked rhythms of everyday life.
